Daggermouth by H.M. Wolfe absolutely wrecked me in the best way.
This dystopian romance follows Shade and Greyson as they navigate the brutal realities of New Found Haven — a society that reminded me a little of The Hunger Games with its ring-based class system and growing poverty the farther you move from the center, while also carrying shades of The Handmaid’s Tale in the way women are treated as lesser and controlled by the men around them.
I was hooked from the beginning, but the last quarter of this book? Jaw. On. The. Floor. Every time I thought I had things figured out, Wolfe dropped another bomb, and then another, until I finally stopped trying to pick my jaw up because the twists just kept coming.
What really made this book stand out to me wasn’t just the shock factor, though — it was the constant tension underneath everything. There was this lingering feeling that something terrible was always right around the corner, and Wolfe used that tension masterfully. The emotional stakes kept escalating and by the end I was completely wrecked.
This book gave me everything: fierce anger, anxiety, shock, heartbreak, and the kind of emotional whiplash that makes you sit in silence afterward because your brain needs a minute to recover.
The pacing was fantastic — fast and gripping without ever feeling rushed. The characters had depth without pages of unnecessary backstory, and I appreciated that Wolfe was willing to make painful choices instead of wrapping everything up neatly. It made the emotional impact hit even harder because nothing felt safe.
This is absolutely a sticky brain book for me. I finished it over a week ago and I am still not over it.
Clearly, I am a sadist, because I read this knowing book two isn’t expected until 2027. Wolfe, you are KILLING ME.
