Bright Burns the Flame – ARC Review
There’s something about a street-survivor heroine being thrown into structured military training that always hooks me. Give me grit. Give me snark. Give me reluctant authority figures and unresolved tension.
Bright Burns the Flame delivers on several of those fronts — but not in the way I initially expected.
The Premise
Lory has grown up on the streets, surviving by stealing and trusting no one. When she’s caught and sent to Ashthorn Ward to train as part of the king’s army, she’s forced into a new world of discipline, hierarchy, and dangerous power dynamics.
And yes — there is a certain someone named Falcrest.
We’ll get to him.
The Pacing
I’ve seen this book described as fast-paced, but that wasn’t my experience. For me, it read slower and more character-driven. The pacing reminded me a bit of Dire Bound — immersive, but not adrenaline-heavy.
It took me a little while to fully sink into the story. The early chapters build the world and establish relationships rather than throwing you straight into chaos.
If you love high-action fantasy, this might feel slower. If you enjoy watching characters simmer before they ignite, you’ll likely vibe with it more.
The Tension (AKA The Real Star)
The tension between Lory and Falcrest?
Absolutely. Freakin. Delicious.
It’s restrained. It’s loaded. It simmers instead of explodes. And it had me wanting dual POV so badly I could scream. I need to know what that man is thinking.
The romance isn’t front-and-center explosive — it’s tension-first, promise-later — which worked really well for me.
Characters & Found Family
Lory’s snark? Top tier.
Her resilience? Solid.
The emerging found-family dynamics at Ashthorn Ward? One of my favorite parts.
The side characters felt distinct, and the bonds forming between them added emotional depth to the story.
The Magic System
The magic system is intriguing — but we only get glimpses of it in this book. It feels like the groundwork is being laid for something bigger in future installments, and I’m curious to see how it expands.
The Ending
Yes, it ends on a cliffhanger.
No, I’m not emotionally destroyed.
But yes — I will absolutely read the next book to see where it goes.
